Frequently asked questions

Products

What kind of products do you make?

Surge Narrows Collective is an ecosystem of work rooted in place. We currently create:

  • Of Surge & Keel — handcrafted wooden boards and objects made from forest materials

  • Surge Blooms — small‑batch forest‑based balms and bodycare

  • The Cabin — a place to stay and experience the land that shapes everything we make

Each is a different expression of the same place and values.

Are your products handmade?

Yes. All of our products are made by hand in small batches, with close attention to material, process, and finish. Because of this, natural variation is expected and celebrated.

Will my product look exactly like the photos?

No two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Wood grain, colour, knots, and edge shape vary naturally from piece to piece. Likewise, small‑batch bodycare can show subtle variation between batches. These differences are part of what makes each item unique and connected to real materials.

Are your bodycare products natural?

We use high‑quality raw ingredients and keep our formulations simple and purposeful. Ingredients are chosen for function, feel, and longevity — not trends.

We do not use artificial fragrance or unnecessary fillers. Full ingredient lists are always provided on product pages and labels.

Are your products vegan or cruelty‑free?

Some Surge Blooms products contain beeswax, which is not vegan. We do not test on animals.

If you have specific ingredient questions, please feel free to reach out.

Use & care

How do I use Surge Blooms balms?

Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin and massage gently until absorbed.

Our balms are designed for:

  • hands and cuticles

  • dry or weathered skin

  • gentle aches and tension

  • daily grounding rituals

A little goes a long way.

Can I use the balms on my face?

Our balms are formulated primarily for body use. Some customers choose to use them on facial skin, but we recommend patch testing first, especially if you have sensitive skin.

How should I store my bodycare products?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight. Because our products are made with natural oils and waxes, they may soften in warm temperatures.

How do I care for wooden boards?

Wood is a living material and benefits from regular care.

  • Wash with warm water and mild soap

  • Dry immediately — do not soak

  • Re‑oil periodically with a food‑safe board oil or balm

Care instructions are included with each board.

Shipping & returns

Where do you ship?

We currently ship within Canada. If you are located elsewhere and interested in our work, feel free to contact us.

How long will my order take to ship?

Orders are typically processed within 3–7 business days.

Handcrafted wood pieces may take longer depending on availability and finish time. Estimated timelines are provided on individual product pages.

Do you offer local pickup?

Yes, local pickup is available in Yellow Point, Campbell River and Read Island.

Do you accept returns?

Because many of our products are handmade and made‑to‑order, returns are handled on a case‑by‑case basis.

Please contact us within 7 days of delivery if there is an issue with your order.

What if my item arrives damaged?

If your order arrives damaged, please contact us as soon as possible with photos of the item and packaging. We will work with you to resolve the issue.

The cabin

Is the cabin available to book?

The cabin at Surge Narrows will be available by request, not instant booking.

Stays are intentionally limited and thoughtfully vetted to ensure a good fit — for guests, the cabin, and the place itself.

How does the booking process work?

Booking the cabin is a collaborative process.

After an initial inquiry, we’ll connect to:

  • chat about your plans and expectations

  • confirm group size and intended use of the cabin

  • review access logistics (boats, tides, weather)

  • discuss water use and conservation

  • complete a liability waiver before confirming the stay

This process helps ensure guests arrive prepared and aligned with the realities of off-grid island living.

How many people does the cabin sleep?

Once complete, the cabin will comfortably sleep 4–6 people.

Group size is discussed during the inquiry process to ensure the space is used as intended.

How do guests access the cabin?

The cabin is accessed by boat or floatplane only.

Guests may:

  • arrive with their own boat, or

  • arrange to rent one of ours (subject to availability and an additional fee)

Access details, docking, and safety considerations are reviewed in advance.

Is the cabin off-grid?

Yes. The cabin is off-grid and designed to work in rhythm with the surrounding environment.

This includes:

  • limited fresh water, especially during summer months

  • simple systems that require mindful use

  • a slower, more intentional pace of living

Guests must be comfortable conserving water and respecting the limits of the place.

What kind of experience is the cabin meant for?

The cabin is intended for guests who value:

  • quiet adventures in the Discovery Islands (prawning, fishing, kayaking)

  • nature and simplicity

  • off-grid living

  • thoughtful use of shared resources

It’s not designed for parties or high-impact use. It’s a place to slow down, notice the tide, walk among trees, rest, while also adventuring to nearby islands.

Where is the cabin located?

The cabin is located at Surge Narrows on Read Island, BC — the same place that shapes everything we make.
