BY WATER

Arriving by Water

Most visitors arrive by boat or water taxi.

The narrows are navigable at appropriate tide conditions, and access is typically planned around slack water when currents ease and the channels quiet.

Water travel here requires awareness and respect — tides move quickly, and conditions can change. For those unfamiliar with the area, local water taxis or experienced operators are strongly recommended.

Tide awareness is essential when navigating Surge Narrows.

BY AIR

Arriving by Floatplane

For those who want a truly memorable arrival, a floatplane is one of the most beautiful ways to reach the Discovery Islands — especially if you’re coming from Vancouver Island or beyond.

CorilAir Charters is a locally operated floatplane service based in Campbell River, British Columbia, with more than 50 years of experience flying from coastal communities to remote, floatplane-accessible destinations like Surge Narrows.

One of their most celebrated experiences is the Historic Mail Flight — a seasonal journey where you can ride along as mail is delivered by floatplane to post offices across the islands, with time on the ground at places like Surge Narrows to stretch your legs and take in the view.

Arriving by Land and Ferry

Most visitors reach Surge Narrows by combining road travel, ferry crossings, and boat through the Discovery Islands.

The journey typically begins in Campbell River, followed by the ferry to Quadra Island, a drive to Hoskyn Landing, and then a short 5-minute boat ride to the Surge Narrows dock. It's also possible to boat from Campbell River to Surge Narrows -- it is about a 1 hour ride by boat. Either way you go, crossing moves you farther from highways and closer to water, forest, and tide.

Schedules change seasonally and can be affected by weather. Allowing extra time — and embracing a slower pace — makes the journey far more enjoyable.

Once You Arrive

Surge Narrows is small, walkable, and intentionally quiet.

There are no taxis, ride-shares, or busy roads. Most places are reached on foot, bicycle, or by small boat. Movement here follows daylight, weather, and tide.

This simplicity is part of what defines life here — and what many visitors come seeking.
