A Day at the Cabin — January at Surge Narrows

Winter at a Remote Cabin in the Discovery Islands, British Columbia

January at the cabin is quiet in the best possible way. Some days are foggy, others cloudy and rainy, and sometimes the sun burns through the morning fog to create a glorious (although chilly) day.

A Peaceful January Day at Our Surge Narrows Cabin

The docks are still. The water moves slowly, almost lazily, reflecting the pale winter sky. Boats rest where they’ve been left, waiting for longer days and warmer light. The only sounds are the soft lap of the tide, a distant eagle overhead, and the occasional creak of wood warming in the sun.

These photos were taken yesterday on one of those rare, luminous January days — blue skies, gentle light, and just enough warmth to remind us that spring is already on its way.

If you're tired of the noise, the hustle and bustle, and the concrete of city life, this is a place where you can stand still, hear the wind through the trees, and simply be.

Visiting Surge Narrows: Stillness, Light, and Space

While we don’t (and won't!) host guests here in January, days like this feel like a quiet promise of what’s coming in the spring and summer, when this dock becomes a place of movement again.

In the spring and summer, this becomes a place to explore at your own pace. It can look like morning coffee overlooking the water, slow breakfasts before heading out by boat or kayak. After a full day, it's evenings watching the light change across the water, and eventually the sun sinking behind the islands in the distance.

Just life at your own pace.

Exploring the Discovery Islands by Boat from Surge Narrows

From the cabin, the Discovery Islands open up in every direction. Cortes Island, Quadra Island, Stuart Island... and as far as the Mainland if you boat for a couple hours.

Boating here feels both expansive and intimate — sheltered channels, quiet anchorages, and long stretches of water framed by forested shorelines. It’s easy to spend a full day exploring nearby islands, stopping to fish, paddle, or simply drift and take it all in.

From the cabin, you can travel by boat through the Discovery Islands — weaving between forested shorelines, sheltered coves, and open stretches of water that feel expansive and grounding all at once. Some days are for adventuring; others are for staying close, swimming off the dock, or simply sitting still and watching the world move.

A Cabin Stay Designed for Rest, Nature, and Slow Travel

You can be active here — boating, paddling, exploring — but you can also do very little at all. The cabin invites rest without asking for it. There’s space to slow down, to notice small details, to settle into a rhythm of tide and light.

In January, we love seeing a glimpse of that rhythm -- even if only in its most stripped-back form. We are looking forward to finishing the cabin this year so that we can welcome you to experience it yourself.

Until then, here’s a small winter window into life at the cabin, and the many beautiful days still to come.
